I have been listening to the E Street radio station as I prepare to reconnect with college friends for our collective 60th birthday party at the Jersey shore. One of my favorites, “Lost in the Flood,” has appeared a few times, prompting me to read through the lyrics, filling me with a sense of abandon.
Hurricanes emerge with fury and unpredictability, heedless of any consequences. We cede all sense of control, clinging to life. Communities experience the devastation of loss and separation, senses rendered senseless in the flood. And when the storm passes, we reassert ourselves to rebuild our lives. Our sense of community expands. For it is in knowing loss that we find what truly matters.
