I have been listening to the E Street radio station as I prepare to reconnect with college friends for our collective 60th birthday party at the Jersey shore. One of my favorites, “Lost in the Flood,” has appeared a few times, prompting me to read through the lyrics, filling me with a sense of abandon.
Hurricanes emerge with fury and unpredictability, heedless of any consequences. We cede all sense of control, clinging to life. Communities experience the devastation of loss and separation, senses…..
The solar eclipse captivated the nation, mesmerizing us through protective lenses that presented the miracle in miniature. Crowds gathered to witness the magnificence of the moon dance, no thought given to political divides. In these moments, we are reminded of the smallness as well as the miracle of life.
The poem “Eclipse” is from “In Search of Something.” Moving out of the Shadow collection and into the Flash collection, it embodies waking from the slumber of Nothingness. Knowing itself through the awareness…..
They say (whoever they are) that the only constant is change. With the world changing ever more quickly, it’s become more difficult to remain present and recognize the signs of change. And being only human, it feels like we resist change by clinging to what we know, trying to remain comfortable.
So in my last blog I wondered how long we need to wait for clarity. And today I learned that if you wait long enough, the answer appears. If you wait too long,…..
I am in the midst of life’s ebbs and flows. Surrounded by the joy of shared achievements and the frustration of personal limitations, life unfolds at an uncertain pace. Bursts of creativity, droughts of doubt, sublime tears of sincerity, seemingly endless despair.
At times like this, the question that comes to mind is, “Why is this happening?” We are told that things happen for a reason, trust in the process. Good things come to those who wait. And so I adopt…..
Last Saturday I had the opportunity to share my poetry at a combined book signing / poetry reading event. The event went smoothly, I sold some books and enjoyed a lively session where I told my story and read “A Personal Connection.” To a smaller than expected audience.
So the ego would say, there should have been a bigger crowd. This wasn’t worthy of being an event, it was little more than a gathering. But it felt real, we connected…..
Today is a day to reflect on what it means to be independent, envisioned as the right to an individual’s life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, a nation that declared the right to self-governance. While we may initially focus on what this means for each of us, the other side of this freedom implies that this right is reserved for all.
So I would like to suggest that we act with compassion, July 6th being the lesser known Compassion Day. Compassion…..
I am now in the midst of change, beginning a break from my steadfast writing routine of the past three years. What served me well in creating my first three books has now lost its luster. There is a sense of loss and acceptance, relief rather than grief. Recognizing the need for separation to continue creation.
Looking for parallels with fatherhood, proud of my children for who they are, seeing that my role as a father also changes as time…..
So I have decided to begin blogging during the next phase of my journey. Having completed the trilogy and recently reaching the age of 60, I am embarking into new territory. Taking time to explore, encouraging myself to slow down and smell the roses.
This feels like more of a conversation, typing these words on my laptop rather than refining my message with pen and paper. I understand that bloggers are supposed to establish a schedule in order to gain a following. I’d rather…..

Today seemed an unlikely day for snow, but snow it did. I continue to seek inspiration from life’s events, especially unexpected and out of the ordinary. Now in the midst of this third and last book of my trilogy, I began to question whether or not the current format of 6 chapters and 18 poems is the right way to end this book. Confirmation came at the deli counter when my lunch order number was 0618 and the bill for my sub…..
